In the great mythologies of northern Europe, the Earth came into being within the union of fire and ice. Amid this strange mixture of extremities, folk-inspired black metal has become an exemplary musical expression for these ancient, fantastical stories and tales.

Inspired by the true masters within the genre, longtime friends Fritz Petersen and Tim Wicklund would form Ifing in 2010. The band's name is taken from the great river in Norse mythology which separates the realms of the gods and giants. Based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the duo have forged their sound into an atmospheric, elegant form of folk black metal in the grandiose tradition of Bathory, Windir, Summoning, Ulver, and Moonsorrow. The resulting debut recording Against the Weald is dense with organic layers of synth, acoustics, blasting drums, and spacious hymns.
